Atlas’s Story

Update, August 2026: Atlas did not lose his leg.

Because of everyone who gave, Ash Ahmad and her veterinary team were able to treat the leg instead of amputating it. It still does not work properly, but Atlas is using it and getting around on all four legs.

The next stage is a course of nerve injections, and we have now been told that with them the leg may recover fully. Those injections and his ongoing care are what donations to Atlas pay for now.

Atlas is a young cat from Cairo, Egypt.

No living being should have to live in this much pain. Every movement Atlas makes is a reminder of the cruel abuse that happened to him as a kitten. His back leg is permanently twisted into an unnatural position, forcing him to drag a limb that no longer functions the way it should. Looking at him, it's impossible not to wonder how long he's been living like this... and how many painful steps he's taken simply trying to survive.

When he was just a tiny kitten, children tied his back leg behind his body and left it there. As he grew, the leg stayed where it had been tied. This did not happen overnight. Atlas suffered for far too long before anyone was able to reach him.

Despite everything, kind people in the area continued feeding him, doing what they could to help him survive. They watched him struggle to walk. They watched him live in constant pain. They knew he deserved more. Now, Atlas is finally safe. He was rescued by Ash Ahmad, the independent rescuer we fund in Cairo, and he has been in her care ever since. When he arrived, our veterinary team believed the damaged leg could not be saved, and that amputation was the only way to free him from the constant pain he had been forced to endure.

But heartbreak doesn't end there. Atlas is terrified of people. He flinches, panics, and becomes defensive whenever someone tries to touch him. We don't blame him. If the story is true, people are the very reason he carries this devastating injury. Add to that the constant pain he's living with every single day, and it's easy to understand why trust doesn't come naturally. His fear makes every examination, every treatment, and every step toward helping him far more difficult, but we refuse to give up on him.

For the first time in his life, Atlas has people who are willing to be patient. People who won't hurt him. People who will fight for him until he no longer has to live in agony. He needed surgery, hospitalization, pain management, diagnostics and medications, and he still needs continued veterinary care throughout his recovery. In the end, his leg was saved, and he is slowly learning to use it again.

Please consider donating today to help cover Atlas's nerve treatment and ongoing medical care. Every dollar brings him one step closer to a life without constant pain. If you're unable to donate, sharing his story is another incredible way to help. Atlas has already carried a burden no animal ever should. Now it's our turn to carry him. Please help us give Atlas the pain-free, love-filled future he's always deserved. Thank you so much.
